George Orwell - The Real Room 101

Room 101 is a place introduced in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. It is a torture chamber in the Ministry of Love in which the Party attempts to subject a prisoner to his or her own worst nightmare, fear or phobia.

This film is about Room 101 - the room itself, Orwell's influences in creating it (his school days, his time at the BBC, Soviet Russia and communism), the psychology of fear used in Room 101, and its impact on popular culture since its creation.

Orwell based Room 101 in part on his experiences of the BBC and the political vetting that used to go on in its conference room on the first floor. There is also a theory that the headmaster's study, in his old school St Cyprians (pictured), was a model for Room 101.

Artist Rachel Whiteread is filmed making a plastercast of the original Room 101, based in Broadcasting House. The room is facing demolition as part of building development.

Contributors to the film include Rachel Whiteread, film director Michael Radford (who directed the 1984 film version of the book), Terry Waite (discussing the power of the interrogation used in Room 101), John Hurt (who starred as Winston in Radford's film), David Taylor (author of an exciting new biography of Orwell), Tony Benn and Margaret Atwood.

After reports of Israeli military exercises as rehearsals for an attack on Iran, and about US administration and Congress sanctioning covert operations against Iran, the Iranian Foreign Minister dismisses the idea saying that Israel is in too much internal turmoil to "resort to such craziness." He adds that the US is in no position to "take another risk in the region." When you're a member of the South Pacific Vanuatu, by the time you get to be eight-years-old or so it's high time to prove your masculinity. And what better way to prove you're ready to take on the challenges and responsibilities of adult life than stripping naked and bungee diving off a rickety 100-foot-tall platform?

Matis Hunting Trials

A BBC presenter Bruce Parry undergoes one of four trials to prove himself worthy to hunt with the Matis tribe of the Amazon jungle. This one involves introduction of green tree frog poison into his bloodstream.

The ritual for recruiting boys into the ranks of Matis hunters begins with dumping a bitter poison directly into their eyes, allegedly in order to improve their vision and enhance the senses. We're sort of interested in how many different combinations of toxic liquids the Matis shamans shoved into their eyeballs before finding a winning formula that didn't dissolve them into a white, gooey mess.

The next series of trials includes beatings and whippings, but those look like Matis massages compared to the final trial. The concluding test revolves around an inoculation of Phyllomedusa bicolor, which is basically Latin for "local frogs that just happen to secrete nature's death juice."

After burning an area of the skin, the frog goop is injected with the use of a wooden needle. The poison is said to increase strength and endurance. However, those enhancements must come after the unbearable lightheadedness, vehement vomiting and violent relieving of the bowels. After all, REAL men don't need innards.

Once the boys prove themselves able to withstand these trials, they are treated to performing them before every future hunt they partake in.
