a deleted scene from Dogma. this scene takes place when the good guys have made it all the way to new jersey, but they are being held hostage by the "evil" demon, Azrael. He is on the angels side just because God kicked all the demons out of heaven, but "after the first million years...escape from hell became my all consuming reason." after bethany explains that if the angels make it back into heaven, EVERYTHING gets blinked out of existence, even Azrael, Azrael explains why he wants to leave. (see my previous dogma post for more information on the general plot of the movie.)
kevin smith does right some superb dialogue!
I wouldn't have guessed that was Jason Lee... wow. I'm not particularly enthralled by Kevin Smith's subtle cough preaching, though... yawn.
Smith claims in An Evening with Kevin Smith (I think it was the first one; might be the second) that this movie was largely the result of him coming to grips with his own religious beliefs. The tribulations of Bethany are based on his own crisis of faith.
Makes it all a little more interesting, in my opinion.
Interesting. I just read Sandman - Season of Mists, which is a great graphic novel. This idea that the pain inflicted in hell is at the beckoning of the sinners and not the Devil appears verbatim in the novel. Eventually Lucifer gets tired of this masochistic drama and kicks everyone out of hell against much resistance. Kevin Smith is a big comic book aficionado. I wonder if he was inspired by novel.
